Joan Dulla Workshop

Our fingers were on fire as we were crocheting with wire at the Joan Dulla workshop in Tempe this weekend held at Arizona State University's School of Art Building. With lightning speed we crocheted chains, beads and earrings... OK, that was Joan. The rest of us moved a little slower but still accomplished much and learned a lot!

Thank you Joan, we all had a wonderful time!

Course Description:
Righteous Reliquaries for Ordinary Objects. Create elaborate containers for those cherished items you keep tucked away, wrapped up in an old sock, or something that you interact with everyday. The focus of this workshop will be designing small containers that incorporate mechanisms from basic hinges to cradle hinges, bayonet closures and more… and we can’t leave out pressure fitting. Cold connections and entrapment will also be covered as we are working with found objects which may not be able to withstand heat. Surface treatments and embellishments will be addressed as well along with cutting glass for viewing options. Students will relate their design choices back to the items they choose to contain.

It will be fun! Here's one for an always important item... the packing peanut.

October Meeting

Thank you to everyone who attended Joan Dulla’s informative presentation on the ins and outs of setting up and selling at craft shows. Joan covered a variety of topics including the types of equipment and suppliers that she uses, the set up and organization of her stand, the tools she always takes with her and handy travel tips. We also learned how to save money on things like credit card transactions and booth storage. Joan also gave great advice on how to market oneself, how to select and apply to shows, and how to take advantage of other opportunities, like teaching workshops. We really appreciate all of the information that Joan shared with us and all of the questions she answered too! Thank you Joan!

Artist Lecture and Professional Practices Workshop with Megan Auman

The ASU Metalworking Department is pleased to announce visiting artist, Megan Auman from Towson University. Megan will be presenting a lecture about her work and giving a professional development workshop emphasizing on business survival skills for the working artist. Please see details below. Megan Auman resides in Jonestown, Pennsylvania, where she maintains a studio making sculpture and jewelry. Her work explores the floral patterns found in textiles and decorative ironwork. Through excessive decoration, she examines the way we perceive domesticity and the contemporary home. She is currently a faculty member in the metals department at Towson University. Megan earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Metalsmithing from Syracuse University, and an MFA in Jewelry/Metals/Enameling from Kent State University. Her work has been widely exhibited across the United States and included in several publications such as Art Jewelry Magazine, Metalsmith Magazine, 500 Bracelets, 500 Brooches,and the Penland Book of Jewelry. They promise a friendly atmosphere and weather permitting an outdoor fire as well. So practice up on your favorite campfire songs! As I mentioned earlier, there should be plenty of us with experiences and/or latest projects to share and why not do it over a plate heaping with yummy food (and desserts)! Anything goes, such as tips from workshops, Yuma Symposium stories, treasures from the Tucson Gem Show, your own work or even a hilarious yet non-offensive joke if you have one… this may be preferred over that song you were thinking about sharing.

Anyway here is the breakdown if you are looking for some direction as to what to bring:
Last names beginning with A-J should bring a main dish; K-R should bring a salad and S-Z should bring desserts.
